The American Legion Moon Brothers Post 275 Marty Nie $500 Scholarship Award

Who is eligible?

  • Any Independence Resident or attendee at an Independence School who is a student in their senior year who is considering United States military service, in/or applying for an ROTC program and/or had parents or other close relative who served or are serving in the United States military.

Why?

  • Supporting students who are from military families or considering military service themselves
  • Recognition of American Legion Legacy Award Winner and remembrance of Marty Nie
  • Sponsorship of Wholesome American Legion Programs
    • Children & Youth Pillar
    • National Security Pillar
    • Americanism Pillar

Requirements:

  • 750 – 1000 written words on how their personal belief system was formed through their ties with the military service member or military program and why it is important to support our military, veterans and their families
  • Should include a minimum of 20 hours of Community Service supporting military, veterans and their families; however, any community service is a positive
    • Must have log of hours, date completed (must be within 365 days of application date), and focus of time spent
      • Example: 3 Hours /  9/7/2017  / Volunteer for Post 275 Highway Clean-up
    • Open to High School Seniors whose current residence on date of application is in Independence, KY
    • GPA requirement – 2.5 (minimum)
    • SAT or ACT score (if applying for traditional college)
    • A cover page that has their name, email, phone number, address, name of school, name of guidance counselor and their contact information.
    • If applying as a child or a current or former service member application must be accompanied by parents DD 214 Member 4 (copy is OK and SS# should be redacted) or copy of Military ID, or VA medical card.
    • Complete packages can be mailed to American Legion Post 275 PO Box 36 Independence KY 41051 or emailed here. If questions please contact the Post at 859-429-0750.
    • All packages must be submitted no later than by 1159 pm on March 31 of their graduation year.
  • American Legion Post 275 will handle all applicants and board them to determine the winner through the Children & Youth Committee
  • The Committee Chair or Legion Officer will validate the results and notify the Nie Family, the School Counselor and Recipient
  • The Award Check will be presented by the Nie Family (if available) & a Post Officer, and/or the Committee Chair at the Post Meeting of the award year or at the public formal High School Scholarship Award Ceremony.
